When to Drink Hydrogen Water and How Much You Really Need

Hydration is essential for good health, with experts generally recommending around 2–3 litres of water per day for adults (depending on age, weight and activity level).

But if you’re drinking hydrogen water, you probably want to know how much of that daily water should be hydrogen water…

Let’s find out. In this guide, we’ll break down the ideal daily amount, when to drink it, how often, and whether it’s possible to drink too much.

What Is Hydrogen Rich Water?

Hydrogen-infused water is normal drinking water that has been infused with molecular hydrogen, a strong antioxidant that may help reduce oxidative stress in the body.

Unlike alkaline water or other wellness drinks, hydrogen water delivers a healthy dose of hydrogen gas, which your body then absorbs and utilises.

Hydrogen Levels Compared to Regular Water

Before we start discussing hydrogen levels and how much you should drink, you need to understand how it’s measured.

Ordinary bottled water has virtually no measurable dissolved hydrogen gas – it’s just plain H₂O. Hydrogen-infused water, on the other hand, is measured in parts per billion (ppb) or milligrams per litre (mg/L):

  • 1,000 ppb = about 1 mg of hydrogen per litre of water
  • A 500 ml bottle of well-prepared hydrogen water would therefore contain around 0.5 mg of hydrogen

This means that even a single glass of hydrogen water delivers a measurable dose of molecular hydrogen that you’d never get from normal bottled or tap water.

How Much Hydrogen Water Should I Drink a Day?

Most experts recommend around 1-2 litres of hydrogen water today, but of course, this depends on your body size, lifestyle, and health goals.

The right amount of hydrogen water depends on:

  • Body size & weight – Larger individuals generally need more hydration.
  • Activity level – Athletes or active people benefit from higher intake.
  • Health conditions If you’re dealing with oxidative stress, inflammation, or recovery, you may drink closer to the upper range.
  • Hydrogen concentration Stronger hydrogen levels mean you may need less volume.

So, here’s a general guide on how much hydrogen water you should consume every day based on the above factors:

  • If you’re just starting out: Aim for around 17 - 34 oz of hydrogen-rich water a day
  • If you live an active lifestyle: Drink up to two litres (68 oz) a day to support recovery and performance
  • If you’ve been drinking hydrogen water for a while: Drink around 1 or 2 litres a day for maximum hydration. Always keep your hydrogen water bottles handy!

Consistency matters, so we recommend you drink smaller amounts of hydrogen water spread throughout the day, as opposed to drinking a large amount all at once.

How Often Should You Drink Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water works best as a daily habit, not an occasional boost – so you should consume it daily as part of your normal hydration routine.

  • General routine – 2–3 servings daily (morning, afternoon, evening).
  • Active lifestyle – Add a serving before or after workouts.
  • Long-term use – Benefits such as reduced oxidative stress and improved recovery are most noticeable after weeks or months of consistent use.

Why Does Frequency Matter?

  1. Your body can only absorb and use a limited amount of hydrogen at once, so spacing it out helps maintain steady antioxidant support.
  2. Hydrogen concentration decreases over time, so frequent fresh servings are more potent.
  3. Regular daily intake over weeks and months is when most people notice the biggest benefits.

What Should The Hydrogen Concentration Be?

Aim for a hydrogen concentration of 1,000 to 1,300 ppb. Such concentration ensures you’re tapping into the therapeutic effects of hydrogen molecules in the water.

  • Lower concentrations of 500 ppb or less may still be beneficial, but it won’t deliver the same antioxidant effect.
  • Higher concentrations of 1,600 ppb or higher are safe, but your body can only utilise so much hydrogen at a time. More isn’t always better.

If you’re using a home hydrogen generator, drink the water fresh. Hydrogen is a gas and will gradually escape, reducing potency the longer it sits.

Can You Drink Too Much Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water is considered very safe, with no known toxic limit. That being said, some people may experience minor side effects when they start drinking hydrogen water, such as digestive upset and diarrhea.

Here are two key things to consider when drinking hydrogen water:

1. Avoid Overhydration Drinking too much water in general can lead to hyponatemia, which dilutes electrolytes. Our kidneys can only process around 0.8–1.0 liters of water per hour – drinking more than this can be excessive and lead to overhydration.

2. Consider Hydrogen Content – High concentrations are safe, but your body only uses a certain amount at a time. ‘Overdosing’ on hydrogen isn’t a concern, but drinking lots of hydrogen water means drinking lots of water, which can be a concern.

Keep your total daily hydration around 2–3 litres, and let 1–2 litres of that come from hydrogen water.
