Does a Hydrogen Water Bottle Really Make Hydrogen? We Had a Third-Party Lab Test Ours
You can't see dissolved hydrogen, smell it or taste it. So we sent our bottles to H2 Analytics in Nevada. Here is what the lab measured, model by model, and what the numbers mean for the water you drink.

Every hydrogen water bottle makes the same promise: press a button, wait a few minutes, and your water is full of molecular hydrogen. The tricky part is that you have no easy way to check. Dissolved hydrogen has no color, no taste and no smell.
That's why I would rather show you lab reports than describe our bottles with adjectives. Below is exactly what a third-party lab measured, how it measured it, and why some of our numbers are higher than others.
Why You Can't Test Hydrogen Water by Eye (or With a TDS Meter)
Bubbles aren't a measurement. Every hydrogen bottle makes gas bubbles during a cycle. What matters is how much hydrogen stays dissolved in the water when you drink it, and you can't see that.
A TDS meter can't read it either. TDS meters measure dissolved minerals. Hydrogen is a gas, not a mineral, so the number on a TDS meter doesn't change. Plenty of first-time buyers try this, including one of ours:
“A Tds device isn't an effective measurement for hydrogenated water because it only measured ppm and ec, and doesn't detect the hydrogen.”
And hydrogen doesn't wait around. It is the smallest molecule there is, and it starts leaving water as soon as you open the cap. An accurate reading has to be taken right after a cycle, with lab equipment built to measure dissolved gas.
That is the job of a lab like H2 Analytics.
Who Tested Our Hydrogen Water Bottles, and How
In August 2024 we sent a Piurify Hydrogenator® 10 oz bottle, factory-new and still in its box, to H2 Analytics, a hydrogen water testing and certification lab in Henderson, Nevada. We later did the same for the 17 oz bottle with handle and for the Flask, so each model has its own report. Piurify requested and paid for every test. The lab ran them with its own equipment and its own method, and reported what it measured.
How the lab measured it
- Filled the bottle with distilled water and tightened the cap.
- Ran each cycle, opened the cap and immediately drew a sample with a gas-tight syringe.
- Measured the dissolved hydrogen by gas chromatography (static headspace analysis), calibrated on the day of testing.
- Repeated every test three times, averaged the results and adjusted them to sea level.

What 4,090 PPB of Dissolved Hydrogen Means for Your Water
PPB means parts per billion. 4,090 PPB is the same as 4.09 milligrams of hydrogen in every liter of water. The lab also worked out how much hydrogen you drink when you finish one full 10 oz bottle after a 10-minute cycle: 1.15 mg. After three 10-minute cycles back to back, the lab measured 6,300 PPB, or 1.76 mg in a full bottle.
One number, three ways to write it
Brands list hydrogen in PPB, ppm or mg/L, which makes them hard to compare. In drinking water, 1 mg/L equals 1 ppm, and 1 ppm equals 1,000 PPB. So 4.09 mg/L = 4.09 ppm = 4,090 PPB. Same measurement, different label.
How does a small bottle reach that level? It's sealed. As the bottle makes hydrogen, pressure builds inside the chamber and pushes more of it into the water than could dissolve in an open glass. A pressure relief valve in the cap prevents an unsafe buildup of pressure.
All three bottles use a proton-exchange membrane sandwiched between two platinum electrodes, the SPE/PEM design you will see on quality hydrogen generators. According to the lab, that design lets each bottle work with any type of drinking water, including distilled, regardless of mineral content.
Why Some Numbers Are Higher: Back-to-Back Cycles
Hydrogen numbers depend on time. One press of the button runs one cycle. Press again as soon as it ends, without opening the cap, and the bottle keeps adding hydrogen to the same sealed, pressurized water. The longer the total run, the higher the concentration.
Our 17 oz bottle shows it best. The lab ran its programs one at a time, then back to back with the cap closed:
Measured Hydrogen by Cycle Time
Parts per billion (PPB), H2 AnalyticsThe Flask gets its higher number a different way: it has a built-in 20-minute program, and a single 20-minute run measured 8,630 PPB. The 10 oz follows the same pattern as the 17 oz: 4,090 PPB after one 10-minute cycle, 5,810 PPB after two back to back and 6,300 PPB after three.
How to read any “up to” number
A figure above a bottle's single-cycle result usually means cycles were run back to back. That's a real measurement, as long as the minutes are stated. On this page, every number comes with its minutes and its report. If a label doesn't say how long, ask.
Choose what fits your day: one quick cycle when you're heading out, or back-to-back cycles at your desk when you want a higher concentration. Longer runs use more battery per glass.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Buy Any Hydrogen Water Bottle
Whatever you buy, ask these before you pay:
- Who measured it? Look for a named lab and a report number you can read.
- How? Look for a method that measures dissolved hydrogen directly, such as gas chromatography.
- After how many minutes? An “up to” number means little without the cycle time behind it.
Our answers: H2 Analytics, gas chromatography, and the minutes next to every number above. Comparing bottles? Our 7-point buyer's checklist goes deeper. Weighing a bottle against tablets or cans? See what a glass of hydrogen water really costs.
What the Reports Tell You
These reports answer one question precisely: how much molecular hydrogen each bottle dissolves into your water, and how fast. That's the part of a hydrogen bottle you can't check for yourself, and it's the part we can prove, with a signed document, a method and a date.
What Customers Notice First
Most of our reviews don't talk about science at all. They talk about how easy the bottle is to use, how the water tastes, and drinking more water than before.
“I chose this particular model because it's certified. It's a beautiful bottle. It's a joy to watch it work.”
“The fact that this bottle is certified was a big selling point for me. With so many off-brand options out there, I wanted a hydrogen generator I could trust.”
“I like the taste and I drink more water now. Watching the LED blue light and bubbles, makes it fun too!”

What to Know Before You Buy
A good purchase starts with the details, so here they are:
- The 10 oz is compact. One fill is about 280 mL. If you drink a lot of water, the 17 oz holds 500 mL per fill.
- Drink it fresh. Hydrogen starts leaving once the cap comes off, so the best moment to drink is right after a cycle ends.
- Higher numbers take longer. The 10 oz reaches 6,300 PPB after three 10-minute cycles (30 minutes), and the 17 oz's top result took 40 minutes. Longer runs use more battery.
- None of the three is glass. The 10 oz and 17 oz vessels are food-grade polycarbonate, a material chosen for a chamber that holds pressure.
And here is the most useful piece of criticism we've had, from a four-star review:
“The directions to set up could have been a little more clear (the set up is not even particularly difficult, the directions just don't make it very clear). But once it's set up, it's easy enough to use going forward and works very quickly to hydrogenate the water.”
Fair point. That's why every bottle is backed by step-by-step video tutorials and a support team that answers within 24 hours.

Hydrogen Water Bottle Lab Tests: Questions We Hear Often
What does PPB mean on a hydrogen water bottle?
PPB means parts per billion of dissolved hydrogen. In drinking water, 1,000 PPB equals 1 ppm, which equals 1 mg/L. So 4,090 PPB is 4.09 milligrams of hydrogen in every liter: the same measurement written three ways.
Can a TDS meter measure hydrogen water?
No. A TDS meter reads dissolved minerals, and hydrogen is a gas, so the number doesn't change. Dissolved hydrogen has to be measured right after a cycle, with lab equipment built for dissolved gas, such as gas chromatography.
Are the tested bottles the ones you sell today?
Yes. Each report covers a model we sell: the 10 oz Hydrogenator® (report H2AR-240821-1), the 17 oz with handle, model PHB2026 (report H2AR-251025-1), and the Flask, model FHWB2026 (report H2AR-250918-1).
How long should I run a cycle?
Each built-in program runs 5 or 10 minutes (10 or 20 minutes on the Flask). For a higher concentration, start another cycle as soon as one ends, without opening the cap. On the 10 oz, three 10-minute cycles in a row measured 6,300 PPB. The chart above shows what the lab measured at each setting.
Is it safe to run cycles back to back?
Each bottle's cap has an internal pressure relief valve to prevent an unsafe buildup of pressure, and the Flask also has a manual pressure relief button. Follow the instructions in your bottle's manual and video tutorial.
What water should I use?
Any drinking water works, including filtered, tap or distilled. The lab tested with distilled water, and its reports note that the SPE/PEM design works regardless of mineral content.
Can I pay with HSA or FSA funds?
You may be eligible to use HSA/FSA funds with a Truemed Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). At checkout, Truemed asks a few private health questions and an independent licensed provider reviews your answers to decide eligibility. Truemed is for qualified customers. See terms at truemed.com/disclosures.
