Can Kids Drink Hydrogen Water?
If you’ve added hydrogen water to your wellness routine, you might be wondering whether your kids can enjoy hydrogen water too. Well, in short, yes – they can!
But is it safe for children? How much hydrogen water can children drink? And what are the benefits of hydrogen water for kids? We explore all of this and more in this blog post, so read on.
What is Hydrogen Water?
Hydrogen water is just like the water your family already drinks – however, it has an added boost of hydrogen gas. It looks and tastes like normal water, but is designed to deliver additional health benefits.
It is created by dissolving molecular hydrogen (H₂) gas into regular drinking water. The infused hydrogen molecules can help reduce oxidative stress in the body, which is linked to tiredness, inflammation, slower recovery, neurological conditions, aging, and much more.
It’s an easy and natural way to support better energy levels and general well-being for adults and children alike.
Is Hydrogen Water Safe for Children?
Yes, research suggests hydrogen water is generally safe for children – if, of course, consumed in moderation.
There have been plenty of studies on the benefits of hydrogen water for adults – but unfortunately, research on children is limited. In the research that has been conducted, there have been no harmful side effects of hydrogen water reported in children.
So yes, hydrogen water is considered safe for children, but you should avoid giving excessive amounts of hydrogen water to your children, make sure they are still drinking enough regular water, and seek advice from a specialist.
Note – Molecular hydrogen gas (H₂) is “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) under Notice No. 520 by the The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, you should only give your children hydrogen water to children with the recommendation from a specialist.
What do the studies say?
Research is limited, but there have been some small-scale hospital reports in Japan, where hydrogen-rich saline water was given to infants and school-age children for conditions associated with oxidative stress. No serious side effects were documented.
Another study, this time in mice offspring, found that hydrogen-rich water (HRW) reversed anxiety-like and social behavioral deficits, concluding that HRW had positive neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects during early development.
Can Infants Drink Hydrogen Water?
No, you should not give hydrogen water to infants under 12 months. This is because babies have delicate digestive systems – their primary source of hydration should come from plain breast milk or formula.
However, for toddlers and older children, small amounts of hydrogen water is considered safe when it’s introduced gradually, with advice from a specialist.
What do the studies say?
A 2016 clinical study involving 40 newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) found that giving small, medically supervised doses of hydrogen water alongside standard treatment helped reduce inflammation and protect brain cells.
Researchers observed lower levels of inflammation markers (IL-6 and TNF-α) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE), which suggests hydrogen water could have potential neuroprotective benefits for newborns in clinical settings. However, due to a lack of research, it’s not currently advised for newborns.
Benefits of Hydrogen Water for Children
Children need plenty of hydration to stay healthy and energised for play time, and hydrogen water offers a gentle way to support that.
Hydrogen water can do wonders for kids. Hydrogen water is perfect for children who always feel sluggish and tired. It will give them the ultimate power to participate in daily life chores actively. Hydrogen water also helps improve their quality of life, strengthening their body cells and organs. This means it will provide them protection against deadly diseases.
Here are some more ways hydrogen water may benefit kids:

More Natural Energy
Hydrogen water can help children feel more awake and active, especially during school or sports activities. The added hydrogen molecules act as antioxidants, helping to reduce oxidative stress in the body (one of the factors that can contribute to tiredness).
Hydrogen water can be perfect if your child has a busy school schedule or enjoys after-school activities – it can help them stay refreshed and alert without relying on sugary drinks or caffeine.
Better Focus
As well as giving more natural energy, hydrogen water may also boost focus and support mitochondrial function. Hydration is key to good brain function, and hydrogen water provides all the benefits of regular hydration, but with added antioxidant support that may help improve focus and cognitive performance.
In fact, many parents will give their kids hydrogen water before school or while they're doing their homework to help them feel more clear-headed and alert.
Healthy Growth
Hydrogen water is nice and gentle on the body, and may protect cells and tissues from oxidative stress, which naturally increases as children develop and grow. This support at a cellular level can help boost overall well-being and long-term health.
Likewise, the antioxidants in hydrogen water may also help to strengthen the immune system, which makes it easier for your children to fight off everyday colds and infections.
Faster Recovery
Children can be energetic, to say the least. This can mean over-exerting their muscles and getting worn out, whether it be after swimming lessons, dance class or football practice. The good news is that hydrogen water can help them recover more quickly after physical activity.
A recent study found that molecular hydrogen reduces exercise‑induced pro‑inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, improves muscle function, and lowers blood lactate concentrations. This makes it a great addition to a sporty child’s daily routine.
Gentle on Digestion
Hydrogen water is non-acidic and gentle on the stomach, making it a suitable alternative to sugary or carbonated drinks. This is also one of the reasons why many parents choose to give their children alkaline water. Check out our guide on hydrogen water vs alkaline water for more.
Healthy Hydration Habits
Does your child drink too much soda? Or do they enjoy sugary drinks too much? Hydrogen water can be a great, healthy alternative. Hydrogen water tastes just like regular water (despite the many differences), so your children may be more willing to drink it.
Having your little ones prioritize hydration from an early age can help them build lifelong healthy habits – and with the added hydrogen, it’s an easy way to make hydration feel a little more exciting!
Note: Hydrogen water should complement, not replace, a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Always consult your child’s healthcare provider if you have concerns.
Child Doses vs Adult Doses
Smaller servings of hydrogen water are recommended for children. Their bodies are smaller and their hydration needs are different, so it’s important to offer age-appropriate servings.
See our table on how much hydrogen water per day:
|
Age Group |
Recommended Daily Intake |
Equivalent in Glasses (200 ml) |
|
Toddlers (3–6 yrs) |
100–150 ml |
½ – ¾ glass |
|
Children (7–12 yrs) |
150–250 ml |
¾ – 1¼ glasses |
|
Teenagers (13–17 yrs) |
250–350 ml |
1¼ – 1¾ glasses |
|
Adults |
500–1000 ml |
2½ – 5 glasses |
Hydrogen water can be introduced gradually – starting with small amounts and monitoring how your child responds. Because hydrogen is a natural antioxidant, there are generally no harmful effects at these moderate doses, but it’s always best to ensure children continue drinking plain water as well.

Who Else Can Drink Hydrogen Water?
Hydrogen water is not just for kids… Here is a list of those who can take advantage of the hydrogenated water. (spoiler alert – anybody can benefit from hydrogen water!)
Elderly
The hydrogen-infused water keeps an adult as active as a kid. This water is a great preventative approach for neurodegenerative diseases that are common in adults. It also helps increase the enzyme activity, resulting in more energy. Now you can enjoy your days just like you would have if you were younger.
Athletes
It is also seen that hydrogenated water is a natural way to enhance the athletic performance of a person. The primary function that the water performs is that it decreases the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles and blood, reducing inflammation and muscle fatigue.
So, when a player is playing on the field and drinks the hydrogen water continuously, it is seen that they do not get tired quickly. Instead, they stay energetic and excited throughout their game.
Pregnant Women
Pregnant women are very cautious when they are eating or drinking new things. But now you don't need to worry because hydrogen water is very safe. The hydrogen water gives ultimate protection to your fetus.
Hydrogen has strong resistance against environmental radiation that can cause mutations. Now your baby will be protected in your body, and the hydrogen water enhances the normal development of the fetus.
Healthy Adults
This water can also be used by people who are healthy and fit. It will protect your organs from damage and give your body a shield from diseases and the invasion of microorganisms. Some people also notice that hydrogen water can help to support weight loss.
