What Is the Best PPM for Hydrogen Water?
Have you recently invested in a hydrogen water bottle? Or are you considering adding hydrogen water to your wellness routine? If so, you've probably come across the term PPM - but what does it mean, and how can it affect the benefits of hydrogen water?
PPM stands for parts per million, and is a key factor that determines how effective your hydrogen water is. Put simply, the higher the PPM, the more hydrogen your bottle products.
Let’s explore this further… Read on for everything you need to know about hydrogen water bottle PPM.
What Does PPM Mean in Hydrogen Water?
PPM stands for parts per million. It’s a unit that measures the concentration of infused/ dissolved hydrogen gas (H₂) in water.
Put simply, it shows how much hydrogen is present in the water you drink.
For example, a hydrogen water bottle that produces 1.5 PPM of hydrogen means there are 1.5 milligrams of hydrogen gas per liter of water.
Ultimately, the higher the PPM, the more hydrogen molecules there are, which means there are more molecules to act as antioxidants and support your overall well-being.
PPM vs PPB: PPM (parts per million) measures hydrogen concentration on a larger scale, while PPB (parts per billion) is 1,000 times smaller, so 4,000 PPB = 4 PPM.
Why Does PPM Matter?
Hydrogen concentration directly affects the benefits you may experience when drinking hydrogen water. If the PPM is too low, you may not get enough hydrogen to see meaningful effects. However, if it’s too high, the water may lose hydrogen faster or become less stable over time.
Research suggests that hydrogen-rich water with a PPM of 1.0–1.6 can help:
- Neutralise harmful free radicals
- Reduce oxidative stress
- Promote energy recovery after exercise
- Support cognitive function
- Support cardiovascular health
- Enhance metabolism
Lab studies confirm that hydrogen‑enriched water at 1.0–1.3 ppm can quickly reduce oxidation in cell models by quenching hydroxyl radicals – proving that it has antioxidant effects at physiologically relevant concentrations.

Hydrogen water bottles like the PIURIFY Hydrogenator® Bottle can achieve high, stable concentrations ideal for everyday use (without needing complex equipment!)
Hydrogen tablets generally produce less hydrogen than hydrogen generator bottles and pitchers. Learn more in our blog on hydrogen water tablets vs hydrogen bottles.
What Is the Ideal PPM for Hydrogen Water?
The ideal PPM for hydrogen water for maximum benefits typically falls between 1.0 and 3.0 PPM.
- 1.0–1.5 PPM – ideal for daily hydration and antioxidant support
- 2.0–3.0 PPM – stronger concentration for more noticeable effects
The PIURIFY Hydrogen Bottle is designed to generate water within this optimal range, ensuring maximum hydrogen retention while keeping the taste light and refreshing.
Can You Have Too Much Hydrogen Water?
In short, no – you can’t have too much hydrogen water. This is because hydrogen water is considered safe to drink at any concentration achievable by consumer devices such as hydrogen water pitchers, bottles or tablets.
Even at high PPM levels, your body releases any excess hydrogen gas through breathing or urination, so there’s no risk of “too much.”
However, balance is important. Drinking a few glasses of hydrogen-rich water a day is enough to experience the potential benefits without waste.
If you’re wondering how much hydrogen water you should drink a day, most experts recommend around 1-2 liters of hydrogen water per day, but of course, this depends on your body size, lifestyle, and health goals.
Low PPM vs High PPM Hydrogen Water: What’s the Difference?
|
Hydrogen Level |
Typical PPM |
Effects |
|
Low (below 1.0) |
Light |
May not deliver noticeable antioxidant effects |
|
Medium (1.0–1.5) |
Balanced |
Ideal for daily wellness routines |
|
High (2.0–3.0) |
Strong |
Supports quicker recovery and higher antioxidant potential |
A hydrogen bottle that can consistently achieve 2.0+ PPM can give you the perfect balance between effectiveness and practicality.
Low PPM Hydrogen Water (Below 1.0 PPM)
- Minimal antioxidant effect (may not significantly neutralise free radicals)
- Good for casual hydration if you just want a slight boost
- Suitable for everyday use, but effects on energy recovery, inflammation, or skin health are likely subtle
Medium PPM Hydrogen Water (1.0–1.5 PPM)
- Balanced antioxidant support (helps neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress)
- Can help with post-exercise recovery and reduce muscle fatigue
- Supports general wellness and may contribute to improved skin and cognitive function
- Ideal for most daily users who want a reliable, effective dose without needing very high concentrations
High PPM Hydrogen Water (2.0–4.0 PPM)
- Strong antioxidant effect
- More noticeable improvements in post-workout recovery, energy levels, and inflammation reduction
- Can provide stronger support for skin health, cardiovascular function, and metabolism
- Perfect if you’re looking for concentrated, therapeutic doses
Note: 4 PPM+ is the maximum you can get in a consumer product.
How to Measure Hydrogen PPM
If you want to know how much molecular hydrogen you are actually consuming, or whether your hydrogen bottle or generator is performing as expected, you can test it.
There are several ways to test hydrogen water:
- Hydrogen Test Strips – Strips that react with hydrogen water, changing colour depending on the concentration.
- Digital Hydrogen Meters – Measure dissolved hydrogen gas directly and display the concentration in PPM (or sometimes PPB).
- Redox Potential Measurement (ORP) – Can give a rough estimate of hydrogen activity by measuring the water’s oxidation-reduction potential.
These tools can measure the concentration in real-time, which means you can confirm your bottle or generator is working efficiently. The best method of measuring PPM is through a digital hydrogen meter, which can give you a more accurate concentration in PPM or PPB (parts per billion).
What About PPM in Hydrogen Water Generators?
Hydrogen water bottles work by using electrolysis to split water molecules, infusing the water with molecular hydrogen while keeping it safe and drinkable.
The PIURIFY Water Hydrogenator Pitcher produces up to 1,300 PPB (~1.3 PPM) per glass. While lower than the portable bottle (~4 PPM), this is still well within the effective range for antioxidant benefits and daily wellness.
Our generators at PIURIFY are engineered to maintain a consistent hydrogen output across uses, ensuring that each glass of water has the same high PPM concentration.
If you want higher PPM per glass, a portable hydrogen water bottle is the better choice, especially for single servings or concentrated antioxidant support.
How Can I Keep Hydrogen Levels High?
Hydrogen water may only last a few minutes in an open container, or up to 5 hours in a sealed aluminium container/ Mylar pouch. To maintain hydrogen levels, you should:
- Drink your hydrogen water soon after production
- Keep it sealed to prevent hydrogen escape
- Avoid shaking or stirring
- Use clean, filtered water for best results
You should also make sure you keep your hydrogen water bottle clean for best results – regular cleaning can prevent buildup and maintain water quality. We recommend you clean your bottle at least once per day if you use it daily. Read our blog on how to clean your hydrogen water bottle for more information.
Does Temperature Affect Hydrogen Concentration?
Yes, temperature can affect hydrogen concentration. Hydrogen escapes more quickly in warm water, so cold or room-temperature water is ideal for maintaining PPM levels.
Although we don’t recommend freezing hydrogen water, adding ice to hydrogen water can lead to optimal hydrogen concentration.
